GamePro?s Gift Guide 2003: Gifts Under $20

Have a Jackson in your wallet for holiday cheer? Try action figures, anime DVDs, or weird controllers!

Case Logic Cases
You play their games; will you buy their carrying cases? You could do worse than these rugged little man-purses, endorsed and co-designed by action sports icons Tony Hawk, Dave Mirra, and Shaun Palmer. Like their namesakes, these GBA cases are stylish and built to take a beating-the thick nylon, strong zippers, and generous padding definitely serve to keep things safe inside. Unfortunately for SP owners, these were designed with the original GBA and Game Boy Color in mind (especially Palmer?s), and they could use more compartments for cartridges, batteries, and headphones-but they?re still excellent pieces, and your SP (or camera or MP3 player or cell phone) won?t suffer in the least.

Gamepro Editor Action Figures
Yes, it?s a shameless plug, but if you missed them, you have only a little while longer to track them down. Dr. Zombie, Dan Elektro, and Major Mike have already been released, and Miss Spell has just shipped to, um, round out the collection nicely. Each figure is limited to 2500 pieces (100 of each are personally autographed by the editors) and could be tricky to track down in software stores, so you may want to order direct from JoyRide Studios.

Game Elements Control Element
The original PlayStation lives on as an excellent portable machine, the PS one-and this joystick extends its life even further. Plug the one-piece unit into the front of the PS one for a compact but satisfying arcade feel with no extra wires messing up your laptop arcade. It?s sturdy enough for action- oriented games like Incredible Crisis and Um Jammer Lammy, convenient for slower-paced stuff like Resident Evil and Xenogears, and really offers a satisfying, knobby-ball-joystick arcade feel on must-own PlayStation games like Metal Slug X and Poy Poy. (Oh, and if the PS one owner on your holiday gift list doesn?t have Metal Slug X or Poy Poy...there are two more gift ideas.)

Tecmo Dead Or Alive Extreme Playing Cards
Admit it-Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is one of the guiltiest pleasures in all of video games. You know it?s not deep; you know it?s about eye candy. Who cares? Celebrate the cheesy goodness with this set of playing cards-just like the ones you?ll find in Zack?s casino in the game. There are two decks (four suits means four girls per deck), and at press time, they were selling very fast on Tecmo?s website. Once they?re gone, they?re gone, so don?t disappoint the horndog on your holiday shopping list...and if you have a bigger budget, keep reading for an even more interesting DOAX collectable.

EverGlide Gaming Mat and Optical Pads
The best mouse pad you can buy for five bucks? Believe it-the EverGlide Gaming Mat is thin, super-smooth, and specially designed to give your optical mouse something to sink its sensors into. Available in six designs, it?s attractive, but mousing is believing-you?ll be able to tell the difference and find precise movements are easier than ever. If you?re looking for something a little beefier for a little more money, the hard plastic Attack Pad and Giganta (seen here) are pretty much unbreakable, and they feature a glitter-like substance baked right in for maximum optical tracking. Dan Elektro uses both models and swears by EverGlide?s stuff, but don?t let that deter you.

Jakks Pacific Atari 10-in-1 TV Games
There?s something about the old Atari joystick that simply defines gaming. Jakks wisely started there and built 10 old 2600 games into its base-plug it into the TV, throw in four AA batteries, and you?re ready to play 10 old-school gems like Adventure, Asteroids, and Yar?s Revenge (yes, believe the hype-it rocks). While it?s strange playing paddle games like Circus Atari, Pong, and Breakout with a joystick, and it?s not as good as a proper wood-grain Atari 2600 unit with cartridges and everything, it?s easier to connect (standard RCA plugs replace the old RF switch), and it?s definitely more authentic than playing emulated ROMs on your computer.

JoyRide Studios Halo Action Figures
If you get only one toy for the holidays this year, it should be this jaw-dropping rendition of Master Chief. Finally immortalized in 3D plastic, the hero of Halo stands seven inches tall and features 18 points of articulation-ingenious ball joints in the knees allow Master Chief to re-create most of his recognizable poses in the game without making him seem doll-ish like a Power Ranger or G.I. Joe. There are even subtle details like cracks in the armor and blemishes from enemy attacks that add to the sense of realism. Although he?s molded in plastic, the dull finish and multi-hued paint deco make the armor seem to be convincingly made of metal. The highly polished chrome finish of the copper-tinted visor is the crowning touch to all the fine detail. An LED-lit Cortana and the Warthog are also available-but get them when you see them because they?re selling like crazy.
