Earth and Beyond Week?Day Three: Mars

Day Three of Earth and Beyond Week brings us to Mars and the genetically-engineered, physically perfect Progen, E&B?s warrior race.

You weren?t born?you were engineered. Your entire race was crafted to be the perfect settlers for the harsh environments of Mars when Earth colonized the red planet long ago. Now you?ve established yourself as a race in and of itself, and the other human races know your people as hardy, aggressive, and strong people who will not stand for injustice. Your people get by on strength and force, which is good, because you have plenty of it. Your ships might not be as fast as the Terrans? or as loaded with nifty tricks as the Jenquai?s, but no one in the galaxy can withstand and give out damage like you can.

The Progen are all about war. Not surprisingly, Progen warriors quickly learn what they need to know to survive. One of the first skills you?ll learn is the ability to use a gravity pulse to decrease a foe?s movement rate, so that your slower ship can catch up. Once you?ve removed an enemy?s speed advantage, all other things being equal, a Progen warrior ship will easily prevail. You?ll also learn the secrets of the different weapon types in Earth and Beyond: beam weapons don?t require ammunition, but they drain your ship?s energy, and they must be used at close range; projectile weapons are longer range and fire very quickly, but they require expensive ammo; and missile weapons are super-long range and can be fired even if you?re not facing your target, but they require very expensive missile ammo. Each weapon type is strong against certain kinds of enemy, and as a Progen warrior, you have a particular affinity for projectile guns, whereas Jenquai warriors favor beams, and Terran warriors are good with missiles.

As a Progen warrior, your life boils down to killing, killing, and more killing. You might just want to park yourself near a group of pirates and take them out for the loot they leave behind when you kill them. You can also take missions from terminals in some starbases that ask you to kill a certain enemy, explore a certain area, or deliver a certain item. As a warrior, you can hire yourself out to traders and explorers who need a little muscle to back them up in their travels. You?ll never be as fast as members of the other two races, but you?ll always be tougher and able to deal out more damage. A Progen warrior ship demands respect when they appear, because they have to survive without the speed of a Terran or the tricks of the Jenquai.
