Super Smash Bros. Melee isn't like other fighting games. In fact, some people wouldn't call it a fighting game at all. When it comes right down to it, all you need to worry about is scoring the final blow that knocks an opponent out of the arena.
Smash Moves
A wise ape once said that to master the Smash is to master the Melee-it's the game's "finishing move," so to speak, the way that you'll wind up knocking most of your foes out of the arena to score points. Your score goes up +1, theirs goes down -1. It's that simple. And remember, "stealing" other players' KOs isn't just an accepted way of life...it's an absolute necessity.
The method for executing a Smash Attack is the same for all 25 characters-tap (AD A). For even more power, Smash Attacks can be charged for up to one second before they automatically are released upon a foe. If you find that you're having problems pulling them off consistently, tap the control stick a fraction of a microsecond before you tap A.
If you see anyone's damage rise above 100%, forget whatever you're doing and make the damaged enemy your primary target.
Position yourself so that you can Smash your opponent toward the closest edge of the stage; never Smash toward the center of the arena.
Begin charging a Smash Attack by simultaneously tapping (AD A). Release A when your foe is within range, and SMASH them out of the play area! The higher your opponent's hit percentage, the further he'll fly.
Grabs And Throws
Grabs and Throws are efficient ways to do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Make sure no other opponents are around because performing a grab leaves you extremely vulnerable to third-party attacks-before, during, and after.
First, put up a shield by holding the DEF (L or R) button.
When an enemy gets close to you, press A to grab them and put them in a lock. Each character has a different grab range, so experiment with your favorites.
Tap A repeatedly to pummel your quarry. Don't overdo it, or they'll shake loose and escape.
Now tap the control stick in any direction-preferably over a cliff or toward the edge of the stage?and hope they don't make it back to solid ground.
Special Moves
So many characters, so many special moves, so little time. Basically, tapping (AD B) will perform a special move. And, depending on the move and character, things can change whether you jump, or charge or Smash the special move. You can experiment to figure out what's best for you, but here's basically how the special moves break down:
Projectiles
These are standard long distance attacks that do medium damage. They are typically performed by pressing B alone or in tandem with right or left. Since they've got little to no smash value, they're mostly good for keeping enemies away. Examples include Mario's fireball (B) or Link's arrows (B).
Clear the Room
Tapping (up B) or (down B) will often send anyone within your general vicinity flying away from you. Use these crowd-clearing techniques to eliminate chaos from your life. Examples include Link's Sword Spin (up B) and Donkey Kong's ground slam (down B).
Smash Jr.
These look like a Standard Attack but behave like a Smash Attack. In other words, direct down powerful. They're most often performed by charging B, then releasing. Marth's Charged Sword is a good example.
Counters
If you do a special move and have no clue what it did, chances are it's a counter. These immobilize you for approximately one second, but if someone tries to attack you, they'll receive a HUGE amount of damage. You'll generally and counters attached to (down B) attacks. Examples include Princess's ?holding up Toad? attack, ?Jigglypuff's fall asleep? command, and Marth's ?hold sword and change colors? attack.
Gnats and Trojan Horses
Samus's Bomb Attack (down B) is a prime example of a Gnat-a minor nuisance that generally doesn't do more than 1% or 2% damage. It's best suited for annoying your friends, or keeping opponents away while you're trying to escape. Try to avoid using them.
The same goes for Trojan Horses-moves that, when used, could actually lead to your own suicide. Fox McCloud's Dash Attack (right B) will certainly hurt your foe, but more often than not, it'll send you flying over the edge, too.
Items
Always go for these uber-powerful items, or else your opponent could get them and smash you instead:
Warp Star
Tap A, push the control stick toward a large gathering of foes, and you'll slam down on their heads. If they've even suffered a little damage, you're likely to score multiple KOs.
Poke Ball
Depending on the caliber or Pokemon that's randomly unleashed, chaos and mass damage reign supreme on everyone except you.
Hammer
While the Hammer's Smash Factor has been reduced since the N64 version, it's still 10 seconds where no one will dare get near you.
Home Run Bat
It's rather unwieldy, but experts with the bat can be insanely lethal. Use it like a regular Smash Attack, and try making contact with just the tip for extra power.
Just Throw It
Don't want an item? Well, don't just drop it... chuck it at someone by simultaneously tapping (AD Z). Thrown items pack a surprising amount of Smash power, and some items (like the little pink pills) have about a one in eight chance of exploding on contact.
