God of War 3: Sex and Resolution

God of War 3 Designer Todd Papy talks about the possibility of God of War 4, a foursome-based sex minigame, and the never used 'Medusa Blades.'

We went to Sony's God of War headquarters located in Santa Monica, California to talk to Todd Papy, design director for God of War 3. In this exclusive interview, he shed some light on the likelihood of God of War 4, the possibility of a foursome-based sex minigame, and what they've done to ensure that boss fights will be even more mind-blowing than those featured in God of War 2.

Papy also explains how the never-used "Medusa Blades," which are briefly shown at the end of God of War 2, eventually evolved into Kratos' new Cestus weapon in the new game.

GamePro: One of the things about the God of War series that always stands out are its epic boss fights, which have become more and more memorable as the series continues. Is God of War 3 going to continue this trend?

Todd Papy: I believe so. That's something one of our designers was saying before: "we can always go bigger." Basically, that refers to both the Titans and our normal fights. They're epic in different ways. The Titans are involved in something that happens in the background in addition to the player being able to fight right on top of them. Everything is just bigger overall.

GP: There's been some speculation that God of War 3 is the end of the story, and that it's fundamentally a narrative trilogy. Is this really going to be the last game? Could this really be the end of Kratos and the possibility of God of War 4?

Todd: It's basically going to finish this story that we're telling about Kratos. Whether we reserve the right to do others in future, I don't know. A lot of us have been working on this project for quite a while. A little break might be welcomed. [Laughs.] But, this story started with the original God of War and then continued in God of War 2. Now we're finally completing it with God of War 3.

GP: So fans will definitely feel like the story arc has come to a conclusion, and they'll feel some closure?

Todd: God, I hope so. Basically, all the cliffhangers should be resolved, so there won't be anymore questions.

GP: I've got to ask this question, especially for our users on GamePro.com. The sex minigames have always been a staple of the God of War franchise, and they've appeared in every game to date, including the PSP-exclusive God of War: Chains of Olympus. What can we expect this time? It's usually just the same deal, where Kratos engages in a threesome, so...

Todd: Are you thinking like a foursome? [Laughs.] Well, it's one of those "you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't" things. We're kind of exploring what you can do differently in the minigame to see if there's something that would be a different take on it, something people haven't seen before. Not "Hot Coffee" or anything like that, but something that's actually woven into the game's story itself.

GP: What do you think is the biggest moment in God of War 3 that stands out above everything else?

Todd: Well, I hope it's the Titans. We've sunk a lot of time and money into this, and we've been messing around with it since God of War 2. It's been a very long process to get it to the point that it's at now. We're starting to see everything come together, such as getting the art just right for the Titans, and they now look like actual finished levels. When you see the Titans move around, it could either be an "oh, sh*t!" moment or it could be that everyone picks it up and goes "meh." We're shooting for the "oh sh*t" moment. So far everybody's been extremely positive about it.
