7 Things Zombieland and Dead Rising Have in Common

It's hard to ignore that Zombieland, the new "zombedy" starring Woody and the kid everyone confuses with Michael Cera, looks and feels a lot like Dead Rising. GamePro takes a look at seven key things that are in both the movie and the game.
Zombieland Trailer:
Dead Rising 2 Trailer:
With the release of Resident Evil 5 on Xbox 360 and PS3, the Evil Dead-like Nazi zombie flick Dead Snow, and now Zombieland, 2009 is quickly turning into the year of the zombie (not to mention the new Nazi Zombie DLC released this year for Call of Duty: World at War). And no one's happier about the glut of zombie entertainment than the GamePro editors -- yes, even Dave "scaredy pants" Rudden love zombies too.
After seeing Zombieland this weekend, we couldn't help but notice how much it shared in common with Capcom's tongue-in-cheek zombie slaughtering series Dead Rising. Here are seven things that stood out the most. PS: We highly recommend seeing Zombieland, and don't let the gore turn you away!
By McKinley Noble and Patrick Shaw
Unexpected Cameos
Zombieland: Without spoiling what's arguably the best scene overall in the Zombieland, let's just say that it features a surprise appearance that's even more outrageous and hilarious than Mike Tyson's cameo in The Hangover. We're not going to say who the cameo is from, but trust us when we say that it's unforgettable.
Dead Rising: Dead Rising on the Xbox 360, as well as the Wii version Chop Till You Drop, both have cameos of sorts... You can dress up as Bionic Commando and Mega Man, complete with the blue bomber's trademark Mega Buster weapon. Sure, it's optional and you're the one technically doing the cameo, but who cares? It's still cool.
Which Does it Better: Zombieland!
Improvised Weapons
Zombieland: You might have seen this in Zombieland's trailer, but there's one scene where Woody Harrelson's character uses a banjo to lure out zombies hiding in a super market -- with the song the creepy hillbilly kid plays in Deliverance no less -- and then uses the musical instrument to bash his brains out. Another creative zombie slaying from the movie is when an old woman crushes one under a grand piano that's dropped off a roof, flattening the sucker like a moldy pizza.
Dead Rising: One thing that separates Dead Rising from the Resident Evils and the Left 4 Deads of the world is that instead of relying solely on assault rifles, shotguns, and other standard methods of obliterating the undead, you can also use things like ketchup bottles, park benches, king salmon, and stuffed bears to destroy mobs of zombies.
Which Does it Better: Dead Rising (especially Dead Rising 2, which features Dark Maul-esque double-edged chainsaw staffs and wheelchairs armed with machine guns!)
Hot Chick Survivors
Zombieland: No one loves hot young actresses in tight clothing more than McKinley and Patrick, but you have to admit that it's pretty remarkable that out of the five humans not turned into flesh-eating maniacs in Zombieland, one of them is the ridiculously sexy Emma Stone. Not that we're complaining.
Dead Rising: The original Dead Rising also has its fair share of bona fide beauties among the living survivors such as the luscious latina Isabela Keyes and the full-bosomed Jessica McCarney, who's your smoking hot librarian type.
Which Does it Better: Tough decision, but quantity beats quality this time as we're giving it to Dead Rising.

Dave just reminded me of one we forgot: bathrooms playing an important part. In Dead Rising, they're the save points and in Zombieland staying away from bathrooms is one of the key rules of survival.
Too lazy to update.

I thought of Left 4 Dead more than Dead Rising when I saw Zombieland. Which by the way was an awesome movie. Even better than Shaun of the Dead. 4 main survivors in both, double pistols, shotguns, escape vehicles, safe house (go see it and you'll know what I mean). And Gamepro is right the surprise cameo is easily the best part of the movie. Maybe it was more like L4D 2 going off the final scene of the movie at least. After reading this though it does have some great similarities to Dead Rising. Good stuff :)
