The 7 Most Famous Name Changes in Video Game History

The 7 Most Famous Name Changes in Video Game History

What's in a name, anyway? (Probably the difference between success and failure.) At the very least, these famous name switcheroos greatly affected these iconic figures in the gaming industry.

#7. NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
(formerly Icarian: Kindred Spirit)

The 7 Most Famous Name Changes in Video Game History

Despite the fact that Pit was featured prominently in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it seems like Nintendo isn't really making a new Kid Icarus game much of a priority. It's for that reason that we were jazzed to hear that a WiiWare game developer was creating a 2D platformer with a very similar visual style and name. Unfortunately, due to an objection from an outside company the name had to be changed, but surprisingly, it wasn't Nintendo. So now, a game title that slightly alluded to a classic has been shelved in favor of one that doesn't any sense at all.

For Better or Worse? Much Worse.

#6. Visceral Games
(formerly known as EA Redwood Shores)

The 7 Most Famous Name Changes in Video Game History

When you create intense, gripping games like The Godfather, Dead Space, and Dante's Inferno, you want a studio name that reflects the dark overtones of your projects. Unfortunately, being named after the suburbian community housing their office building wasn't building much hardcore cred with EA Redwood Shores. So after making major bank with Dead Space, the developers got to rename themselves Visceral Games. Presumably, it's because Viscus Games was a bit too much.

For Better or Worse? Better.

#5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
(formerly known as Modern Warfare 2)

The 7 Most Famous Name Changes in Video Game History

For a brief moment, it seemed like things were changing. The pointless squabble between Call of Duty developers Treyarch and Infinity Ward. The annoying series exploitation made famous by Activision. By naming the upcoming first-person shooter Modern Warfare 2, Activision was creating divergent paths for its two top shooters, one in which each could really experiment and differentiate from the series. Then some higher-up who makes two decisions a year probably saw a survey and got nervous and made them call the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

For Better or Worse? Much Worse.

I would've said the name change to call of duty: modern warfare 2 was an improvement. The branding means that the game will get the recognition it deserves (as if it wouldn't have already). There's also a very easy solution to the treyarch/ infinity ward "contest". Treyarch could stop developing games! When was the last time they made a game to the level of infinity ward?

I don't think the change of Recon to ODST was worse. ODST's are what you play as, Recon is the armor they wear.

Check out the 1:08 mark. Almost looks like MotionPlus was planned this whole time... o_O

Dude, have you seen any of the MW2 gameplay videos? They could have called this game Poo on a Stick and everyone would have still bought it. Not to mention everyone refers to it as Modern Warfare 2 anyways.

wow. no offense gamepro, but that was a shitty article. most of the name changes were just removing a few words. Like Modern Warfare 2 to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Wow, big whoop.

I think Recon was a worse title when you really think about it. Dolphin does not count as that was a codeword.

2 of those name changes were better, not worse. Halo ODST was for better, because a lot of people would get Halo Recon and Halo Reach mixed up. CoD: MW2 was for better because it got recognition by casual gamers.

I gotta tell ya, "Sports Revolution" and "Fitness Revolution" sound a lot better than "Wii Sports" and "Wii Fit."
