Pokemon 2009 Video Game Championship Round-Up

The National Champions

And just this past weekend, the National Championships for the 2009 Pokemon VGC came to a close with a record breaking crowd and plenty of Double Battles to be had. According to Go-Pokemon and the Pokemon VGC officials, over 1500 people showed up for the final leg of the competition, with lots of young hopefuls still itching to get their shot at the rest of the world in the final showdown at San Diego. Pokemon VGC had the lowdown:

"More than 1,500 Pokemon Trainers flocked to the America's Center in St. Louis for the 2009 Pokemon Video Game and TCG National Championships, making the event the biggest Pokemon tournament ever held. With such a large field of competitors battling to be the best, our new Pokemon National Champions should be extremely proud to have risen to the top."

"The first day of battle narrowed the competition to the top 16 Pokemon Trainers in each age division. On day two, those Pokemon Trainers continued to compete for the title of National Champion and the awesome prizes that accompany the crown. The top 16 Pokemon Platinum Version players in each age division earned invitations to compete on the ultimate stage -- the 2009 Pokemon World Championships this August in San Diego, California."

Standing at the top of the National Championships were the best trainers around, with Senior Division Champ Mike Suleski of Mesa, Arizona taking First Place and Allen Liu running up as the Second Place contender. The Junior Division was taken by First Place Champ Jeremiah Fan of San Jose, CA, who triumphed over Runner-Up Michael Bryan. These players are just two of the top 16 Pokemon Trainers that will be in St. Louis this August to take on Japan, England, Germany, and France, making it one of the biggest worldwide Pokemon tournaments in history. We'll be there to give you impressions from the show floor, so here's looking to the end of summer...

I was there in Dallas but didn't get selected to play (they drew random names from all the contestants and if you didn't get picked, you didn't play). The comp was tough but I woulda bumped off a few, I'm sure. Maybe next year.

There was one in Dallas? Awww....

And what are you guys talking about, brute force over trickery? In some videos of the championships I saw, people were getting fairly strategical. Too much Trick Room, seriously.....
