The 20 Best Platformers: 1989 to 2009

5. Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction (2007)

PS3
Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction, one of the best looking games on the PS3, showed exactly what the difference was between the PlayStation 2 and its next-gen descendant. Ratchet & Clank Future hit gamers with huge levels, massive explosions and graphics that looked smoother than most Pixar films, making it a platformer that eclipsed the competition.

4. Jet Grind Radio (2000)

Dreamcast
Jet Grind Radio was a rare gem for the Dreamcast, taking a very Japanese sense of style and layering it with fluid, simple gameplay that got better and better as you learned the tricks of the rollerblading trade. Developer Smilebit also hit a great audio note with Jet Set Radio's soundtrack, an eclectic mix of Japanese pop, hip-hop, and electronic beats.

3. Donkey Kong Country (1994)

Super Nintendo
Nintendo's big bad ape had always been one of Mario's oldest enemies, but Donkey Kong Country brought DK out of his roots and landed his family in a colorful new adventure on the SNES. Now, players could join Donkey Kong in a hunt for his stolen banana horde that would take them through some amazingly tough and brilliant levels.

2. Super Mario World (1991)

Super Nintendo
Another Nintendo console was just the precursor for another excellent Mario game, as Super Mario World landed players in a gigantic, multi-hour adventure that would see some of the best platforming action in history. Selling an astounding 20 million copies worldwide, Super Mario World was basically Super Mario Bros. 3 on graphical steroids.

The 20 Best Platformers: 1989 to 2009

1. Super Mario 64 (1996)

Nintendo 64
Just like Super Mario Bros. sold the original NES system, the Nintendo 64 profited greatly from the success of Super Mario 64. Taking gaming's favorite plumber from 2D to 3D didn't just change the look of the series either, as Mario hit the ground running with an arsenal of new moves. It took a lot to jump, crawl, and kick your way to all 120 Stars, but the journey was well worth Princess Peach's cake.

Why does he keep referring "Jak and Daxter" as "Jak and Dakter"? It's DAXTER

wow nice list! The kind of list which makes me comment a lot:

#20 I think Crash 3 would have been a much better choice
#14 One of my favorite games ever
#7 wow said there wasn't a good 3D Sonic game? lol, it ranked higher than any other Sonic game on the list
#6 should have been way higher
#5 Never gave the series a try but if it was made by the creators of the original Spyro games, it should be good.
#2 Finally some one acknowledged SMW instead of giving all the credit to SMB3. SMW is, by far, my favorite 2D game
#1 I think SM64 was put on the list for the revolutionary impact it had on the industry, not cause it is the best one, kinda like OoT, I liked SMG better.

I think SMB3 should be on there for bringing the whole World concept into Mario and just being plain awesome!

ZanonX

It's not surprise that Mario has dominated this list. Each time a new Mario comes out, it's feels so much the same and yet always feels fresh and new. I'm also glad to see Super Mario World FINALLY getting ranked above Sonic the Hedgehog, a great game that none the less stole, unfairly, GamePro's Game of the Year back in 1991. I love Super Mario World and I'm glad to see it ranked so high.
