The 20 Best Platformers: 1989 to 2009

10. Prince of Persia (1989)
PC, Apple II
Prince of Persia, originally developed for the Apple II system, was a landmark for both computer games and the platform genre. As a young foreign prince, your mission to rescue a doomed princess is pressured by a two-hour time limit, making every second of gameplay a tense affair. With beautiful visuals, deadly traps and astounding platforming animation, Prince of Persia was a high mark for the gaming industry to match.
9. Braid (2008)
Xbox 360
Merging time travel with platforming gameplay made Jonathan Blow's independent smash-hit Braid a refreshing and memorable experience, but the intricate and mature tale of Tim's struggle to rescue his princess led to a conclusion so surreal that gamers would be talking and debating about it for days.
8. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (1994)
GameBoy
America had the Russians and Batman had the Joker, while Mario had Wario, the rude and crude villain of Super Mario Land 2. The hilariously evil anti-Mario would eventually get his own starring role in Wario Land, with nimble and careful platforming being shoved aside for brash rampaging antics, a fitting match for the game's titular star.
7. Sonic Adventure (1999)
Dreamcast
Remember when Sonic games were hip and cutting edge? Sonic Adventure was the peak of that long-gone trend, taking the blue blur into true 3D with all the speedy gameplay that gamers remembered from the Genesis days. Even though the Dreamcast is a relic of the past, Sonic Adventure is still one of the best, and perhaps the last good Sonic game.
6. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
Nintendo Wii
Taking Mario to the stars was the only logical step Nintendo could take with the Wii, and it paid off handsomely in Super Mario Galaxy. Not only was all the 3D hopping action refined to perfection, but the completely loose rules of gravity, paired with some surprisingly simple motion controls, sold several holdouts on Nintendo's shiny console.

wow nice list! The kind of list which makes me comment a lot:
#20 I think Crash 3 would have been a much better choice
#14 One of my favorite games ever
#7 wow said there wasn't a good 3D Sonic game? lol, it ranked higher than any other Sonic game on the list
#6 should have been way higher
#5 Never gave the series a try but if it was made by the creators of the original Spyro games, it should be good.
#2 Finally some one acknowledged SMW instead of giving all the credit to SMB3. SMW is, by far, my favorite 2D game
#1 I think SM64 was put on the list for the revolutionary impact it had on the industry, not cause it is the best one, kinda like OoT, I liked SMG better.

I think SMB3 should be on there for bringing the whole World concept into Mario and just being plain awesome!

It's not surprise that Mario has dominated this list. Each time a new Mario comes out, it's feels so much the same and yet always feels fresh and new. I'm also glad to see Super Mario World FINALLY getting ranked above Sonic the Hedgehog, a great game that none the less stole, unfairly, GamePro's Game of the Year back in 1991. I love Super Mario World and I'm glad to see it ranked so high.
