Mother's Day 2009 Gift Guide! (Page 1 of 2)

Mother's Day 2009 Gift Guide!

GamePro's handy guide to showing your mother just how much you care!

If life was an RPG and your family was a band of adventurers, your mother would be the tank of the party. She's the one who stands in the front and absorbs the brunt of the punishment. She shields you from harm, fights off the monsters with her tremendous strength and basically does all the dirty work while you selfishly hide behind her and run forward to take all the loot when the fighting's done. And what does she get for her troubles: a phone call and a cheap bouquet of flowers every year on Mother's Day. That's why we've rounded up a list of amazing gifts suitable for the loving mother in your life; it's high time you showed your mother you care and while it's no substitute for a heartfelt "I love you" and a hug, a great present can be the perfect way to thank dear old Mom for all that she's done for you. So stop being a chaotic evil rogue and start being a lawful good paladin (by this, we mean stop being a bad son or daughter and start acting right for a change).

Sony Reader

Digital book readers are nothing new but they're starting to become more and more fashionable. Amazon's Kindle 2 is a decidedly awesome piece of tech and it's getting all the attention right now but it isn't the only digital book reader out there. The Sony Reader is just as amazing plus it has some interesting features all its own. Chief among them is the touchscreen, which makes navigating the menu system a breeze and the integrated backlight which allows you to use the Reader in all sorts of lighting conditions. We also loved the large screen, the unit's sleek design and the integration with Google Book Search which gives you access to over 500,000 public domain books (there are some real gems that your mom will be sure to love in there). It's a terrific device and one that any book-obsessed mother would love to receive.

Jawbone PRIME

We've sung the praises of the Jawbone line of Blu-tooth headsets before and we'll do so again: the PRIME is a new line of headsets that improves upon the original in every way. The sound quality's gotten better, the design has been tweaked to ensure a better fit but the main reason why the PRIME made our Mother's Day gift guide is for the incredibly stylish exterior of the limited edition EARCANDY line. Yes, we know it's what's on the inside that counts but the performance of the PRIME has never been in question; now, you throw eye catching colors and a snazzy look into the mix and you have the technological equivalent of a supermodel who works as a theoretical mathmetician. It's pretty much everything your mother could want in a Blu-tooth so if she's constantly on the go, consider getting her one of these high-end headsets.

Nintendo DSi

If your mother isn't a gamer, the DSi is a great place to get her started on her long and prosperous road to becoming a full time gamer; if she's already there, then she'll definitely want a DSi anyway, because it's a sweet system with a ton of great games. Regardless, it's the perfect system to give to your mother this Mother's Day. We also recommend including some games like Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger and Henry Hatsworth; that should keep her nice and busy for a good long time. The DSi is also great because it has two cameras, which means she can snap a couple of pics if the mood strikes her. We doubt she'll have time though, what with all the gaming she'll be doing.

Dell Inspiron Mini 12

Netbooks are the new hotness when it comes to mobile computing and it's easy to see why: these compact yet capable systems combine power and portability into one svelte package. There are a lot of different models out there but we suggest you put the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 at the top of your list. The Mini 12 sports a 12.1 inch screen, an Intel Atom processor and 60GB HDD but it's only a hair of an inch thick and weighs less than three pounds. It'll handle every day computing tasks but its small size will ensure that it isn't a burden to carry around. Wait, something that's easy to handle yet does what you want it to: why weren't you like that when you were younger?

The Sims 3

There's no denying that The Sims line of games has been a hit with female gamers. We won't pretend to understand why (it probably has something to do with the fact that it was designed by one of the greatest video game creators in the world) but it's a known fact that women, and to be fair, a great number of men, were drawn to The Sims. Now, the third full installment is on its way and from what we've seen, it's got everything that Sims fans love and then some. If your mother liked The Sims at all, we suggest you buy her this title; it won't be out in time for Mother's Day but an IOU or a gift card to a local video game store should fit the bill nicely. It'll also give your mom plenty of time to clear out her schedule so she can play without any interruptions.
