The full version of Metal Gear Solid Touch is now available! As of today it is available through iTunes in the US. In light of the release, Features Editor Dave Rudden chatted with Ikuya Nakamura, Creative Director and Yasuyo Watanabe, Creative Producer of Metal Gear Solid Touch to get all the details of the newest addition to the MGS series.
Why remove stealth, which is a central part of the series?
Ikuya Nakamura (Creative Director):
In addition to the iPhone/iPod touch being a new type of mobile device, our goal was to make the MGS world more accessible to those who have not yet ?touched? the MGS series. We strived for a ?simple MGS? that could be enjoyed by all. Therefore, instead of hard-core geared stealth, we chose the more intuitive, shooting genre.
How much of MGS4's story is revealed in MGSTouch? Does it complement the story or retell it?
MGSTouch is a retelling of Snake?s story as depicted in MGS4.
Downloadable games usually have a short time between announcement and release. How long did it take to develop MGSTouch?
Yasuyo Watanabe (Creative Producer):
The development took approximately half a year.
MGSTouch is not a port of a mobile game, but is being made specifically for this device and so it required some time for development.
Did any team members from MGS4 work on MGSTouch? If so, how did they find working on two drastically different types of hardware?
Ikuya Nakamura (Creative Director):
Myself, the director, as well as programming, graphics, and sound staff from MGS4 are involved in the development. Both MGS4 and MGSTouch were developed to be specialized games that could only be realized on their respective platforms. So in that respect, there was no difference on the development end. However, reproducing the latest cutting edge graphics and sound from MGS4 on the iPhone/iPod touch platform was a formidable challenge.
What kind of new enemies and weapons should the player expect in the Complete Version?
As in MGS4, the Shadow Moses and Outer Haven stages will be featured in the Complete Version. Players can also look forward to battles featuring more variation, such as fighting more of the B&B Corps and controlling Metal Gear RAY.
Did you take player feedback into consideration when developing the additional stages? If so, how did it change the later stages?
We incorporated feedback for the adjustment of the game?s difficulty balance and also looking into additional features that we hope make the game even more enjoyable to players.
