#2: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
When It Took Place:
Placing players in a Soviet jungle during the Cold War, Snake Eater took place 41 years prior to the events of MGS1 where Solid Snake infiltrated the frigid Shadow Moses Island in search of WMDs.
What It Did For The Franchise:
While keeping the Metal Gear Solid series' trademark blend of action and stealth-based gameplay intact, Snake Eater placed a greater importance on having the player rely on new survival methods to progress in the game such as using an elaborate camouflage system to hide in your surroundings.
In MGS: Snake Eater, you even had to burn leeches off your body with lit cigars and hunt and consume wildlife to beef up your rations, chomping on things like alligators, snakes, and other delicious critters. But the biggest thing that MGS3 did for the series other than introducing new gameplay elements was revealing the backstory of Metal Gear main baddie and dad to Solid and Liquid Snake, Big Boss (AKA Naked Snake), who you play as in the game.

#1: Shadow of the Colossus
When It Took Place:
Many gamers wondered how the main protagonist of Ico got his horns, and Shadow of the Colossus filled in the gaps with one hell of a tragic love story.
What It Did For The Franchise:
Ico was already a cult hit due to its unique art style, incredible platforming, and intuitive puzzle elements. Shadow of the Colossus took Ico's cult hit status and pushed the PlayStation 2 to its graphical limits with some of the biggest, most expansive boss fights in video game history. We could literally hear that poor console chug in every epic confrontation with the Colossi. Now, when the hell are they going to announce Shadow of the Colossus 2 for PS3 already?

Pat, you should do a greatest movie prequels list. Star Wars Episode 1 is tops, of course.

I disagree, The Clone Wars CG movie was the best.
