#4: Resident Evil Zero
When It Took Place:
Just one day before the outbreak that occurred in Resident Evil, Rebecca Chambers actually ran the first Raccoon City investigation with Bravo Team, which is the story RE: Zero thrusts you into.
What It Did For The Franchise:
In the Resident Evil timeline, this is the plot that essentially started everything. Resident Evil Zero shed some light on the mysterious events that led up to the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City, as well as revealing one possible origin of the T-Virus. It was also the last game to use Resident Evil's standard "walk like a tank" gameplay, before the dramatic shift to Resident Evil 4's famous over-the-shoulder style combat. Folks who missed this Resident Evil prequel on the GameCube can look forward to the upcoming Wii version of Resident Evil Zero.

#3: God of War: Chains of Olympus
When It Took Place:
Taking place midway through Kratos' decade of slavery to the gods, God of War: Chains of Olympus was a prequel to the first God of War game.
What It Did For The Franchise:
Despite the fact that Chains of Olympus was released on the PSP, a platform not quite as powerful as the PlayStation 2, which God of War and God of War II came out on, this prequel proved that the series' larger than life boss fights and brutal violence can live on a handheld and still satisfy fans.
The game also filled in some of the gaps in Kratos' miserable past, explaining why he had no choice but to sacrifice his own daughter. Another thing this GoW prequel did for the franchise as a whole is showcasing a brand-new weapon aside from Kratos' blades that wasn't just a hunk of useless garbage (something that most auxiliary God of War weapons tend to be). We're talking about the bone-crushing, iron boxing glove, the Gauntlet of Zeus, which looks a great deal like Kratos' Cestus weapon in the upcoming God of War III.
