#6: Halo Wars
When It Took Place:
Halo Wars dropped players in 26th century Harvest (a planet similar to Earth that is colonized by humans) located in the Halo universe. In the Halo timeline, the game takes place twenty years before Halo: Combat Evolved.
What It Did For The Franchise:
Aside from treating FPS fans to a gripping tale that predates the renowned Halo trilogy, complete with cutscenes that feature the best graphics ever in a Halo game, Halo Wars also proved that the sci-fi series is strong enough to venture into other genres.
Halo Wars, while failing to receive as much praise from critics as Halo 3, was a still a success, selling over a million copies in a little over two weeks and earning above average scores from most game pubs (read GamePro's review of Halo Wars here).
Halo Wars took a risk in alienating its hardcore fanbase by delving into the real-time strategy genre, but it turned out that the game was actually worthy of the Halo name and something that completes the Halo experience.

#5: Street Fighter Alpha Series
When It Took Place:
After Ryu beats Sagat in the first World Warrior Tournament, the Alpha Series kicked off with a canon backstory to flesh out the events prior to Street Fighter II.
What It Did For The Franchise:
Street Fighter Alpha immediately set it itself apart from Super SF II Turbo with a character roster that brought back characters from the first Street Fighter -- like Gen, Adon and Birdie -- as well as introducing new future fan favorites like Rose and Sakura.
It also expanded the series' canon to make room for some Final Fight cameos, reintroducing Capcom fans to the likes of Guy and Cody (who was a real beast in Alpha 3). More importantly, the Alpha Series expanded on Street Fighter II's fighting engine with a multi-level Super Combo meter, the ability to air block, and variable "styles" of combat in Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Pat, you should do a greatest movie prequels list. Star Wars Episode 1 is tops, of course.

I disagree, The Clone Wars CG movie was the best.
