THE 8 BEST GAME PREQUELS: Unlike movie prequels, which tend to be absolutely wretched (see: Hannibal Rising, Dumb and Dumberer), there are a number of video game prequels that do their respective franchises justice. Read on to find out which eight game prequels did it right.
Sometimes games that take place before the first installment in a video game series, like Dead to Rights II and Mortal Kombat: Mythologies Sub-Zero, fall flat on their faces. The following game prequels do not and shouldn't be missed.

#8: Silent Hill: Origins
When It Took Place:
Released on PSP and PlayStation 2, the fifth Silent Hill game, Silent Hill: Origins, was a full-blown prequel to Konami's moody survival-horror series.
What It Did For The Franchise:
Origins, as its name suggests, unraveled the mysterious history behind the franchise's blood-curdling, foggy town where Silent Hill's signature abominations run amuck.
While the game did play like your typical SE game, it did bust out some fresh new features like the elimination of a HUD in favor of the screen becoming red when the player takes damage. It also had a deeper fighting system than previous Silent Hill games like Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4: The Room.
While there weren't any radical changes in the horror series' formula with Silent Hill: Origins, we feel it was relatively successful in fattening up the Silent Hill lore with some fulfilling backstory that fans were grateful for.

#7: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
When It Took Place:
Crisis Core fleshed out the details behinds the mission that led up to Zack and Cloud's ill-fated falling out with Sephiroth, predating the events of Final Fantasy VII.
What It Did For The Franchise:
For Final Fantasy fans, it proved that Square Enix had both the tools and the talent to recreate Final Fantasy VII, although it wasn't the game anyone was expecting. Still, it gave us a few more precious hours with Aerith (Aeris?), and let us swing the Buster Sword in combat with SOLDIER's Zack. But seriously, this game just made us more impatient for a FFVII remake on the superior PlayStation 3.

Pat, you should do a greatest movie prequels list. Star Wars Episode 1 is tops, of course.
