Round Seven: How Scary Is It?
Resident Evil 4
From the unsettling, rotting villages to the creepy castle interiors, RE4 was the first Resident Evil in a while to actually make me jump out of my seat. If there weren't cultists or villagers murmuring softly in the background, there was always a bear trap or Indiana Jones boulder hidden nearby to give me a fearful jolt. Added with the looming "man against the world" atmosphere that persists throughout the course of the game, RE4 had me constantly looking back over my shoulder and carefully kicking in every unlocked door.
Resident Evil 5
RE5 is definitely a tense experience, especially when a cutscene shows dozens upon dozens of infected villagers bum-rushing your current position, only to have a gigantic axe-wielding beast cave in your hiding spot. Much of the fear in this game comes from watching yourself slowly run out of ammo, and seeing blade-wielding Majini literally running across rooftops to get at you. Still, nothing gets too scary with Sheva watching your back, essentially guaranteeing that you'll never get dogpiled.
THE WINNER: Resident Evil 4
Having to topple an entire cult of mutants by yourself is a daunting experience, and RE4 was definitely the scarier game. Unlike RE5, you can't simply "Rambo" your way through the game, and turning tail to run from enemies simply isn't an option in most of RE4's stress-building encounters.
Final Round: Overall
Resident Evil 5
Good games make it hard for their sequels to step up to the plate, but RE5 was more than ready for the challenge. I'm still impressed that having an A.I. controller partner works so well in single player, although multi-player is really where the game really shows its shine. Sure, RE5 doesn't reinvent the wheel, but unlike RE4, it wasn't expected to do so.
Resident Evil 4
As a survival-horror adventure, RE4 is the game that people remember as one of the most chilling titles ever. More importantly, it provided a new direction for the Resident Evil franchise, capitalizing on the "smart" zombie craze of the horror genre. It's still considered one of the best GameCube games ever, and with barely any flaws to speak of, it's no wonder that the updated PlayStation 2 and Wii versions of RE4 sold like crazy.
THE WINNER: Resident Evil 4
Let's be honest, no one was expecting such a radical shift in gameplay from Resident Evil 3 to Resident Evil 4. More than that, the combat and inventory system just worked so well, I wish that every Resident Evil game could be remade with the same engine. RE5's good, make no mistake about that, but RE4 was so well polished and scary that it's still the horror king.
Resident Evil 4 Wins: 4
Resident Evil 5 Wins: 3
Ties: 1
OVERALL WINNER: RESIDENT EVIL 4

The bonus graphics round doesn't really fit into this. RE 4 was from last gen, and lets face it the Wii version had pretty much the same graphics. But I'm happy RE 4 won overall, because I think Leon is so much more badass than Chris, and Ada is way better than Sheva.

Really? You guys compared the multiplayer of the two when one didn't even have multiplayer? And how did RE5 win best monsters? The majority of the monsters in RE5 were incredibly similar to those in RE4 and were done in a much better fashion in RE4.
