Resident Evil 4 vs. Resident Evil 5

Round Five: Single-Player

Resident Evil 4

RE4 is the type of game that illustrates just how good a single-player experience gets. Leon's very alone in much of the game, and it's never more apparent than in shootouts with huge crowds of Ganados. With plenty of set pieces to break up the action, including one particularly awesome standoff inside an empty house, the tight pacing in RE4 makes the hours fly by.

RE5 really steps up the action, constantly pushing the player to get through fights as quickly as possible. Sometimes, the Majini can be so overwhelming that discretion is the only way to survive, often making running as good an option than fighting. Even with the occasional showdown in tight corridors, I played the game at such a tight pace that it was relatively easy to blow through chapter after chapter.

THE WINNER: Resident Evil 4

Not having someone to fire over your shoulder makes RE4 the better single-player experience, especially when playing through Mercenaries mode as Ada Wong, Hunk, or the shamefully overpowered Wesker. RE5's great to play alone, but the tension doesn't run as high when playing by yourself.

Round Six: Multiplayer

"Quick! Get that ammo!" "S**t! They're climbing up the ladders!" "I need a first aid spray, hurry!" This is just some of the banter you're bound to have playing RE5 with a friend or two. The game is just built for multiplayer, and it's even more fun when you're both looking down gun barrels at swarms of Majini. Even better, you can play online with a buddy, which is great since you won't have to split up your screen to do so.

With such a good single-player experience, the lack of multiplayer isn't a huge issue in RE4. Still, it could have been fun to have a buddy running around the map with you as helpless Ashley, picking up items and trying to stay alive without weapons. If there's one part that cooperative play would have been great in, Mercenaries Mode was definitely a good place for it.

THE WINNER: Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5's easy online multi-player system is great for friends to get in on the action, and playing offline with someone screaming next to you is just as much fun. More importantly, it proves that Capcom learns from its mistakes, since RE5's co-op is about a million times better than RE: Outbreak's multi-player mess.

resident evil 4 better graphics because it was on a gamecube, which is supposedly had the weakest hardware last gen.

The bonus graphics round doesn't really fit into this. RE 4 was from last gen, and lets face it the Wii version had pretty much the same graphics. But I'm happy RE 4 won overall, because I think Leon is so much more badass than Chris, and Ada is way better than Sheva.

Ada, but that's partially because of tradition.

RE4 is the only game in a very long time that i have actually played through multiple times. God bless her heart.

PS2 had the weakest hardware

Really? You guys compared the multiplayer of the two when one didn't even have multiplayer? And how did RE5 win best monsters? The majority of the monsters in RE5 were incredibly similar to those in RE4 and were done in a much better fashion in RE4.
