After 1999, Resident Evil was a rotting corpse of a series that needed new life and a new direction. After the release of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, the series started to lose its edge with the mild "Outbreak" spin-offs and utterly horrible "Survivor" light gun games. But in 2005, horror fans got the revival they wanted in Resident Evil 4, considered by many (including GamePro) to be not only the best Resident Evil yet, but also the best game of the year.
Resident Evil 4 is considered the game that put the fear back into survival horror, this time with a whole new combat system and a vastly better control scheme. Now players could finally aim for ammo-saving headshots, explore full three-dimensional environments, and survive large shootouts with even larger hordes of enemies. It was a huge change for the series, but one that reminded everyone Resident Evil was still the best around.
Now, Resident Evil 5 is finally hitting U.S. shelves, bringing back the fresh gameplay of RE4 and replacing the terrifying Las Plagas with a new, deadlier breed of enemy. Sure, GamePro loves Capcom's newest masterpiece to death, which is probably evident from our glowing Resident Evil 5 review. But can RE5 really live up to the high bar set by its predecessor? Does RE5's action-oriented thriller focus make our hearts pound harder than RE4's cold, quiet aura of constant menace? Read on to see which game is the most "EVIL".

The bonus graphics round doesn't really fit into this. RE 4 was from last gen, and lets face it the Wii version had pretty much the same graphics. But I'm happy RE 4 won overall, because I think Leon is so much more badass than Chris, and Ada is way better than Sheva.

Really? You guys compared the multiplayer of the two when one didn't even have multiplayer? And how did RE5 win best monsters? The majority of the monsters in RE5 were incredibly similar to those in RE4 and were done in a much better fashion in RE4.
