We chop it up with 1988 Games' Ben Krotin and discover juicy details about the upcoming Wii-exclusive 4-player zombie game in the undead vein of '80s horror flicks.
With big name zombie-slaying games coming soon like Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, House of the Dead: Overkill, and Dead Rising 2 and lesser known potential hits also on the horizon like Bikini Zombie Slayers and Dead Island, zombie connoisseurs have a lot games filled with hordes of the walking dead to look forward to. 1988 Games' tongue-in-cheek horror game Zombie Massacre, which combines driving a convertible with shooting, stabbing, and bludgeoning the undead, joins the growing list of new zombie games coming up. GamePro interviews Ben Krotin to find out everything you want to know about this Wii-exclusive title.
Be sure to check out 1988 Games' 80s-themed official website.
GamePro: What do you do in Zombie Massacre? From the descriptions already publicly known, it almost sounds like a fast-paced arcade party game. Can you elaborate on what the game feels like to play?
Ben Krotin: You kick a lot of zombie ass! Seriously. Basically, the game is sort of like a mix between Crazy Taxi and House of the Dead. Players control driving and shooting, as they race against the clock to deliver an already ticking nuclear warhead to the center of the city.
Along the way, they will encounter hoards of merciless zombies, hapless civilians, and tons of weapons. The game is really a driving game at heart, but one with not-so-realistic physics as well as the fun gimmick of shooting attached.
Players can drive as recklessly as they'd like to, with speed and destruction being the only goal. Also, to immerse players into the driving and shooting experience, Zombie Massacre takes advantage of unique motion controls.
For both the shooting and driving gameplay, the game controls with a combination of the Wii-mote and the Nunchuk. The Nunchuk steers, and the Wii-mote shoots.
Zombie Massacre's team assures us that there will be a massive array of weapons you can butcher the undead with as this official logo proves.
GP: Does the game have a basic plot or setup? Is there any explanation or hint for the zombie presence?
BK: Yes it does! The story of Zombie Massacre revolves around a special train carrying Toxico's latest mutagen chemical. This train unexpectedly derails just outside of downtown New Metro City, and in the process causes horrible and unspeakable transformation of anyone exposed to the substance. In the process of trying to contain the mutations and evacuate those who are healthy, the city plunges deeper into chaos.
Unknown to the public or even to city officials, the federal government decides to intervene with a discreet plan to annihilate the chemical (and the city as well) by using a nuclear warhead smuggled in by the Special Forces.
However, this plan drastically backfires, and now it is up to the sole surviving Special Forces operative and three random street punks with their trusty vintage convertible to get the job done.
GP: How does the shooting gameplay work? What kinds of weapons are available and how to you use them to massacre zombie foes?
BK: The shooting gameplay works a lot like any light-gun based game. Players will point the Wii-mote at the screen and can then press the B-Button to fire a shot.
Because there are so many weapons, each weapon has different characteristics, and some can be rapid fired, while others can even be locked onto special targets.
Additionally, players can use short-range melee weapons, which will enable them to virtually strike at the screen by using swiping, stabbing, and flicking gestures. These weapons range from common things like knives and bats, to things as outrageous as metal chains, holy water, lawnmowers, and even a kitchen sink!

YAY a game that combines my two favorite things. Driving and shooting zombies. it's about friggin time!!!
And on a side note...Why the hell did the developer of this game let uwe boll get ahold of it and make a movie? Seriously House of the Dead is still without a doubt a crappy ass film. the only good part was the actual game footage from house of the dead 2.
if you're going to have your game turned into a movie i would rather have the master of Zombie movies, George Romero get behind it. at least he can make a decent zombie franchise.

I'm intrigued. I'll keep an eye on this one.(btw GP, RE5 is not a zombie slaying game, all the enemies are possessed by parasites and are not undead)
