Fallout 3 Survival Edition

Preparing for the apocalypse can be a bitch. Thankfully, Fallout 3 delivers my favorite SE (in this case standing for "Survival Edition") of the year, making my trip to the Capitol wasteland as refreshing as a Nuka-Cola. The standard extras-DVD, art book-are absolutely worth checking out, but it's the set's other goodies that'll get you out of your Vault; a slick replica of the Pip-Boy 3000 (which doubles as a digital clock), a snazzy Fallout 3 lunchbox, and, best of all, a Pip Boy bobble head, combine for the ultimate fan-service-paying package. At $120 clams, this one's double the asking price of the standalone game. But short of fashioning their own fully functional Fat Man, Fallout 3 fans won't find a better way to get the full-on post-apocalyptic experience.

Saint's Row 2's Collector's Edition

Short of strutting your stuff on the seedy side of town and inviting someone to pop a cap in your ass, you won't get much closer to gang culture than Saint's Row 2's Collector's Edition. The set does contain some filler-feeling extras-tin case packaging, poster-but some other bling-worthy bonus materials more than make up for the been-there-done-that items. A slick, bullet-shaped USB thumb drive-preloaded with some Saint's goodies-and a flashy SR2 money clip, that'll surely garner you some respect at the poker table, earn this set some street cred. Niko Bellic supporters may scoff while they moon over their GTA 4 extras-filled lockbox, but Saint's gamepad gangsters won't do better than this $80 pimped package.

Fable 2 Limited Collector's Edition

The original Fable was famously criticized for under-delivering on the many ambitious promises made by its charming Brit creator Peter Molyneux. And while the content-rich sequel didn't suffer the same fate, the same can't be said for its Limited Collector's Edition; due to some sort of production snag, the set lost many of its "Limited Collector's" content-a Hobbe figure and five collectable Fate cards. Despite my disappointment in Microsoft slimming down the set (that Hobbe would've looked so friggin' sweet caught between my Chimera-versus-Big Daddy desktop melee), it wouldn't be fair to judge the final product on what could've been. So, given it still boasts some exclusive in-game goodies and an interesting making-of doc, it's easily worth the 70 gold pieces to any good, evil, corrupt, or pure Fable 2 fan.

Halo Wars: Limited Edition

The Special Edition love continues to flow into early 2009 with the Halo Wars: Limited Edition. While I haven't gotten my hands on this baby yet, I'm hopeful it'll nicely complement my Halo 3 Legendary Edition. Speaking of Master Chief's trilogy capper, the Halo Wars LE will include three new Halo 3 maps. Additionally, it aims to give you an upper hand on the RTS battlefield with access to an exclusive in-game vehicle and Leader cards that outfit you with some battle-bringin' elite skills. If you can tear yourself from the strategy-focused fun, you'll want to check out Halo Wars: Genesis, a new graphical novel included in the $80 set. Oh, and don't forget to leave some room on your hoodie or messenger bag, next to your Ishimura crew credentials, for the set's Spirit of Fire patch.

My GF got me Resistance 2 for my birthday... so of course I asked for the special edition. That Chimera action figure looks great on my center speaker, between my PS3 and my Wii. Didn't check out the DVD yet... wanted to avoid spoilers. Didn't realized that the Fallout 3 special edition came with a pip-boy alarm clock... looks kinda cool. Can you make a bottle-cap mine with the lunchbox?

ChokaDaChicken

the lunchbox with fallout is alright i guess , it still aint worth $ 20 though

I've got the Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition and it's probably the best overall collector's set I have. I disagree with the Survival Edition of Fallout 3 though (I own it as well). The Pip-Boy feels rather cheap, which is the big draw in the set. Also, the brown paper/cardboard material that the box is made of really could have used some gloss. I always worry it's going to show any finger grease.

Still, a fun article, though Fable 2's limited edition got seriously neutered.

off the list i have 3 of the 7: Dead Space (Ultra, Fallout 3 (Survival), and Fable II (the one where they took out a lot of shit). But this year, nothing has ever came close to the content of Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I-IV Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition.

the funniest thing now, is if you go to Amazon and you look at the prices of Resistance 2 and the Special Edition......they are exactly the same. that's right. Amazon has the special edition for $60.

Sold!

It was actually 3 cents cheaper than the regular edition, lol. I was gonna tell someone to buy the game for me for Christmas (not even the LE!), but screw that, haha. I guess I'll tell them to get me Prince of Persia instead. :P
