Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

ACT IV: HIVE

CHAPTER I: PRIORITIES
Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

[Find the highway to Nexus.]

[Help Dom find the labor camp.]

Your mission will have to sit on the backburner when Dom decides to go look for the labor camps. You'll find a series of yellow switches to activate the lifts on your way. Eventually, you'll spot a labor camp and continue onward in search of Dom's wife.

At the room with the floodgate, kill the grub on the far left before he can reopen the waterway and drown you.

When you get to the bottom level, grab a Boomshield after wiping out the Mauler and other Locust. When you get to the bridge on the left, use the Boomshield to give yourself a fighting chance against the Theron Guard and the other Locust on the other end. Of course, take out the one behind the turret gun as soon as you get a clear shot. If the floodlight's blinding you or your teammate, just pop the bulb with a bullet or two to keep things in the dark. There's a couple of Locust Terminals on the left platform, so check them out to find a piece of data to add to your War Journal collection.

CHAPTER II: ANSWERS
Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

[Check the terminals for the matching Locust symbol.]

Dom will point out terminals for you to scan while looking for Maria. A Locust patrol is at the second terminal, but for once, the Gears will advise being discreet and letting them pass. Before checking out the terminal when the patrol moves on, pick up a War Journal piece in the far corner.

Stay behind the patrols with Dom as you go through the stations one by one. Don't worry about getting too close as long as you follow your teammate's directions. This Locust patrol seems to be lacking in the peripheral vision department anyway.

At last, you'll find the matching symbol by Maria's profile, but things won't be so easy.

[Defend Jack while he scans the containers.]

Boomers, Wretches, Drones and more will storm your corner from both sides, but use your most explosive weapons on the Bloodmounts. They'll storm your cover faster than the Wretches will, and they'll do far more damage up close. If you have any rifles or longer range weaponry, try to score headshots off the Boomer whenever you can. After a few waves of grubs, Dom will finally be reunited with his wife, but the beautiful woman he left behind is sadly no more than an empty shell.

CHAPTER III: HORNET'S NEST
Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

[Find your way to the place.]

Once you're inside the highway proper, search the building you're in for another piece of your growing War Journal. Head outside, and after a short cutscene, get ready for some more Locust to attack. There's plenty of stone structures that will provide adequate cover, so mow down the grubs, do a very thorough ammo sweep, and hit the switch up in the tower.

Clear out the enemies, nail down the Flame Boomers before they can cook you or your teammate, and head into the next area. More grubs come to greet you, with an overzealous Bloodmount that should be your first target. The switch near the bottom of the patio doesn't seem to do anything but raise and lower a nearby wall, so ammo sweep and continue.

As soon as you get to the wide-open area, hit the lever to the left to give yourself some extra protection. A Locust on the rightmost ledge at the other end of the platform will try to lower your cover, so take it out as quick as you can. Soon after that, a Reaver will crash right in front of you, so lob grenades and fire bullets into its hide until it's dead.

Some more cover will let you advance your position, so carefully work your way through the Snipers and other grubs. Grinders will be the last hurdle to jump, so fall back if necessary and hit 'em high. Grab everything you can off the ground (especially any Mulchers) once the skirmish is done and keep going.

[Find a suitable place for Jack to call reinforcements.]

Your path will be blocked off up ahead, and the room with the disemboweled Rockworms has plenty of cover that your enemies will abuse as much as you do. Make things easier on yourself by killing the Boomers with your high-powered guns, then picking off the weaker Locust with a long-range weapon. The next room will be a bit tougher, with Butchers, Drones, and more all rushing you at once. Take out the Butchers first with some well-placed shots to the face, and rush the other Locust if you're feeling bold. Otherwise, work your way in close and lob an explosive near the remaining enemies.

When you get to the next area in the palace, hit the yellow explosive tank on the right wall to give yourself some additional cover. Work your way around the rubble, and be cautious about Locusts throwing grenades in front of you. Get to the circular ring at the other end and Jack will start your homing signal.

[Protect Jack while he is transmitting your position.]

Flip the switch next to you to activate some cover and take aim at the next wave of incoming Locust. Tickers will try to blow up in your face, backed up by plenty of Drones. Try to clear them out as soon as possible, because two Reavers will soon ambush you. They'll actually come up right on your defensive position, and if you get slapped by one of their massive tentacles, it's probably game over. Once the second Reaver goes down and the next gate opens up, your current objective will be set.

[Clear the surrounding area for COG reinforcements.]

Use mortar shells (if available) and explosives to eradicate the grubs in the next section. Keep moving up and flipping cover switches as much as possible, and try killing the Locust quickly with headshot and heavy ammo to salvage their weapons' own ammunition. Once you get around the corner, mortar shells will start dropping around you, so be cautious.

Pick your shots wisely, and make use of any explosive material that the Locust grubs are standing next to. There's going to be plenty of guns to pick up before the next checkpoint (grab the Mulcher with the most ammo), so unload everything you've got at the biggest, ugliest grubs in the room. Once you head up the stairs, you'll be reunited with Cole and Baird.

CHAPTER IV: NO TURNING BACK
Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

[Protect cable cars from Reavers.]

[Board the other cable car before yours falls.]

If you grabbed that Mulcher from before, use it to quickly and efficiently sink the incoming Reavers before they can do any serious damage to your cable car.

Should you get trigger happy and run out of bullets, just use your best rifle to help your team keep up the pressure. When the next cable car gets close, shoot all the onboard Locust and get ready to move to their car. Hit the switch on the car's left side to keep moving further into the palace.

[Find a way into the queen's palace.]

Head up the stairs and grab the Locust Calendar on your immediate left for your War Journal. You'll notice that the Locust Horde seems to be fighting amongst itself, which seems to be all kinds of weird. Push through until you find a switch past the huge turret at the far end of a large platform.

Two branching paths will pop up, with the left taking you down the stairwell, and the right putting you on the lift with the aforementioned turret.

If you go down the stairwell, hustle to every switch you can find and flip it immediately. Each one will lower the Troika turret, which will allow your teammates to brutally ravage the massive crowds of Locust running through the tower. If you're on the lift, make sure to cool your gun after every single prolonged burst of gunfire. If the turret is inactive for too long, your teammates could die, and youd be stuck. Once your team regroups, head down the stairs to the next checkpoint.

Watch out for Boomers in the next wide-open cavern, and make sure to head down the left stairway to activate a passage to the other side of the room. Grab a piece for your War Journal in the far balcony, and hit the switch to lower some stairs. Following a brief cutscene, beat down the two Locust that appear from the far door and get ready to tackle another one that bursts out of a corner door behind you. Take that route to the next room, kill everything on the ground floor, and keep going to your next checkpoint.

Once you're through the next doorway, head to a cover point on the right ledge and try to get some unanswered shots on the Maulers, Tickers, and other Locusts that will head up the left side path.

Clear them out, and you'll take a ride further down into the palace while being chased by the Locust who were behind the mysterious attacks.

CHAPTER V: THE BEST-LAID PLANS
Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

[Enter the palace.]

Here's the bad news -- going in the front door quickly leads to Delta Squad to getting outflanked and outgunned. Hit the switch in the middle of the quad to keep your cover up and take defensive positions while you fend off Locust in the windows. When Baird prompts you, fall back to the staircase leading up to the entrance, but take the path to the right to find another way in.

[Find an alternate entrance into the palace.]

Bloodmounts and more will await you about halfway along the ledge, and once you're past there, you'll have to contend with even more grubs on the Locust lift up ahead. Kill off the Kantus's group, and then take the lift down to your next checkpoint.

[Make your way toward the bottom of the palace.]

When you're in the Locust kennel, you'll find a switch all the way at the end of the hall. Flip it, and you'll be given a choice of the high road or the low road to continue. Whoever's on the high road can provide support fire for the team on the lower path, and make sure to hit the switch after taking care of the Mulcher-wielding Locust. When your team meets up again, double back to the area that was to the opposite side the high road and follow it past the hallway to another War Journal piece at the dead end.

Continue on the path downward, and you'll start to descend a long spiraling stairway. There's plenty of Palace Guards patrolling this section, and the ones with Torque Bows remain the most dangerous. You can try tossing grenades down the stairs, too, especially since the Locust will have nowhere to run but straight into your teammates' gunfire. Eventually, you'll make it to the broadcast room where Marcus and the Rest of Delta discover more about the Locust Horde's plan and the fate of Jacinto.

CHAPTER VI: ROYAL INQUISTION
Gears of War 2 - Full Strategy Guide!

Follow your team to the next room, and search along the left wall to find a Locust artifact for your Journal. Next, hit the switch on the opposite side of the balcony, and choose either the left or right path. Both routes go along a huge grand hall where you'll fight even more Butchers, Tickers, and other Locust. The advantage here is that any long weaponry can be used to aid your teammates if they're lacking the firepower for crowd management.

[Search the bottom level of the palace and locate the queen.]

All right, now it's time to find this queen and dethrone her for good. You'll fight through two waves of Palace Guards in this section, and they're all packing some damaging weapons. Hopefully, you snatched a Boomshield in the last area, which will make moving around a lot easier. Even if you don't have one, there's plenty of cover to keep you in the green, so just focus on getting through the grubs in one piece.

Just before you get to the large double doors at the far end, the platform you're on will drop you into a sealed room. Take the best cover positions you can and use everything you've got to mow down the incoming Palace Guards. Eventually, you'll be able to use the crank in the middle of your immediate area to pull yourself back up to the top level, but you have to time it right. When you're back up top, reload and ammo sweep before continuing on.

Boss Fight: Skorge

Finally, you'll have a chance to go toe-to-toe with the chainsaw-slash-bo-staff-wielding maniac from the first act.

Even if you still have it, don't bother picking up your Boomshield for this fight; you'll need to keep both hands free and your legs set to duck, dodge, and dive at a moment's notice.

Skorge has three specific attack patterns that you need to watch out for. First, he'll hang back on the elevated balconies, taking shots at you while Tickers try to flank your position. Dom will be able to assist with the Tickers for the most part, so watch out for the sound of Skorge's poison grenades. He'll toss a few at a time, and if you get stuck in the poisonous clouds, you're done for.

Whenever you hear the revving of Skorge's chainsaws, equip your Lancer and keep your eyes open. When Dom yells at you to dodge, roll in any direction to avoid a column crashing down on you. Actually, you'll want to roll regardless, since Skorge will sometimes take to the ceiling and attempt to drop stalactites on you.

If you see Skorge rushing at you, rev up your own bayonet and get ready to initiate a chainsaw battle. If you have anything else equipped, you'll be disarmed and turned into meat pizza, so don't drop your Lancer. After a few rounds of this, Skorge will flee the scene, leaving you to pursue Her Royal Highness.

[Pursue the Locust queen.]

[Cross the bridge to get to the Reaver pen.]

Everyone's taking the Reaver taxi service today, so the queen will be long gone. Forget her for now since you've got bigger fish to fry; meet up with Cole and Baird and move on across the next set of bridges. You'll be fired upon as you go, so don't stop to pick a fight -- just Roadie Run until you reach the next checkpoint and the next chapter.

It's a fun title -- I must say that I'm impressed beyond belief I could enjoy such an overthetop bloodfest.

Nice feature, even if I have to question some of the scores. You guys like rank the pistols 1) Snub 2) Boltok 3) Gorgon? Come on now...

I guess it also boils down to what guns you're good and comfortable with.
