#4: Ridley Scott
Notable Film Credits: Gladiator, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, Blade Runner, Alien
Sir Scott has a frustratingly mixed record when it comes to quality film-making. Alien and, especially, 1982's Blade Runner made him an instant god to geeks worldwide. Unfortunately, many of his later films -- White Squall, 1492, and GI Jane come to mind -- were top-heavy bores. By the mid-1990s, Ridley was widely considered a Hollywood has-been.
Luckily, Ridley Scott found his footing again with 2000's bloody epic Gladiator, which turned brutal butchery into Oscar gold. Gladiator shares several common themes with God of War: a disgraced warrior protagonist, a revenge-driven plot, and a setting based in ancient Greece. Though God of War leans more heavily in the direction of myth and monsters, Gladiator proves that Ridley Scott could lend weight to Kratos's movie adaptation.
#3: James Cameron
Notable Film Credits: The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, True Lies
Long considered the definitive geek film director, Canadian-born James Cameron blew away audiences with 1984's Terminator, 1986's Aliens, and 1992's Terminator 2, sealing a classic trilogy of films that no action or sci-fi director has since eclipsed. Cameron is a master of the technical side of film-making -- each of his films has pushed special effects into new frontiers -- but his screenwriting talents and ear for memorable dialogue often go underappreciated. With Cameron's guiding hand, a film adaptation of God of War would feature state-of-the-art special effects and pulse-pounding editing, two trademarks of the veteran director.
As long as Cameron approached the topic of the Greek gods with in a matter-of-face tone, and not the campy fluff that burdened his so-so True Lies, there is probably no more capable director for a film version of God of War.
#2: Peter Jackson
Notable Film Credits:
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Dead Alive
Most people would look at Peter Jackson's extremely eclectic body of work--ranging from shlocky horror to adaptations of classic literature and cinematic treasures--and think giving him a project like God of War would be a risky move. When you consider what he's proven each step of the way, it's actually quite a logical move.
In his early works like Dead Alive, despite the heavy amount of slapstick and corniness, Jackson firmly established himself as a adept gore-merchant. In his Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, he proved that he's more than capable of creating amazing settings and living up to extremely high amounts of hype. With King Kong, he showed he can re-imagine an already-iconic screen legend, doing justice to the past, while creating an equally viable current view. While his current game-based project--codenamed Halo Chronicles--is currently in development limbo, a game like God of War would undoubtedly be more up Jackson's alley. By mixing his two fortes--the gore of his early work and the extravagant settings of his current projects--Jackson could easily make a big budget God of War into the biggest gaming movie of all time.
#1: Zack Snyder
Notable Film Credits: 300, Dawn of the Dead
Snyder has proven himself to be on quite a roll in Hollywood, with his last three projects proving his capability of handling a project like God of War. In 2004, he ably helmed the remake of George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead. In 2006, he proved he could handle large-scale epic combat with 300. And right now, early looks at his 2009 film Watchmen have been satisfying the hardcore fans of the acclaimed graphic novel.
In these three projects,Snyder's touched upon many of the necessary criteria to craft a God of War movie. He's done justice to some highly-regarded francises such as Romero's Dawn of the Dead, and two of the greatest graphic novels of all time, and has proven he can show the brutality of ancient combat. Hell, Leonidas is the closest we've seen to Kratos on film. Snyder's fast-paced, bloody, visceral style is completely in sync with the God of War franchise.

Robert Rodriguez, and Del Toro are great choices. Especially Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth is amazing and so well made, looks beautiful.
It is a good list though, in general.

Del Toro was a great choice, in fact i would like to see him as number 2. i think M. Night Shyamalan could put one hell of a good twist as well as story on this. i mean God of War. we saw him do Signs, the Sixth Sense, the Village. those movies were pretty damn good if u ask me.

I too am dissapointed in the choice of Brett Ratner... but I personally wouldn't like any of these men. I say, let's give it to P.T. Anderson. I think he would tear this film up. I remember when the rumor hit that he was going to direct MGS, I was ecstatic.

This list shows how much other talent there could have been working on what could be a great movie. Hell, it would be sick to see Peter Jackson and Zack Snyder to team up. Dissappointing... at least the games will always be good.
