7 Better God of War Movie directors

Director Brett Ratner, responsible for the underwhelming X-Men 3: The Last Stand, is set to direct the God of War movie. GamePro rebuts with our picks for directors more appropriate for the job.
It's no big secret -- video game franchises have been getting bastardized by crummy film adaptations since the early 90s with painfully bad movies like Double Dragon and Super Mario Bros. The upcoming God of War movie, which was just recently announced, is different because the series is at an all time high. There's a lot at stake in bringing Kratos to the silver screen, especially when so few films based on games have turned out well.
Expectations for the God of War movie are going to be huge. We're not saying the movie is going to suck, but Brett Ratner is certainly not our first pick, who in addition to pinching off X-men 3, also did the funny, but unnecessarily prolonged Rush Hour trilogy. Here are GamePro's picks for seven filmmakers we think are more qualified to handle God of War (2010).
#7: Mel Gibson
Notable Film Credits: Apocalypto, Braveheart
If being responsible for barbarously violent films like Apocalypto and Braveheart (the latter of which went on to win five Academy Awards) doesn't immediately qualify Mel Gibson to stand at the helm of the God of War movie, nothing does. Sure, Ridley Scott arguably single-handedly reinvigorated the dead "sword and sandal" epic film genre with Gladiator, but Mel too has a lot of credit and success in that particular genre, proving his knack for directing historical action films several times.
Just replace the Gibson's portrayal of Scottish war hero William Wallace with Kratos, multiply the carnage by 100, throw in some busty naked Grecian Babes (ones who Gibson will no doubt drunkenly refer to as 'sugar t***' while on set) and we think you have a good idea at what Mad Mel could bring to the God of War movie.
#6: Guillermo del Toro
Notable Film Credits: Blade II, Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Pan's Labyrinth
This is an obvious choice considering Guillermo del Toro's proven track record. Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2 showed that 'the Bull' knows how to treat movies with a fantasy vibe and we're willing to bet he'd do an incredible job with God of War's brutal bestiary. Imagine the creatures that he'd create for Kratos to rip through on his way to the peak of Mount Olympus! Also worth mentioning is the fact that he's used to dealing with big buff dudes with a chip on their shoulders -- the loveable Ron Perlman as Hellboy -- as well as the fact that the man knows how to create a dark and sinister mood.
#5: Robert Rodriguez
Notable Film Credits: From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, Planet Terror
We're putting Robert Rodriguez on this list because he just seems like a cool dude who likes to have a good time making movies. We also admire his rebellious streak -- not only does he take a D-I-Y approach to filmmaking, but he also stands up for his beliefs, going so far as to quit the Director's Guild of America because they wouldn't let him share directing credit with comics auteur Frank Miller on Sin City.
Furthermore, the man did Sin City and he did it right, pulling in Frank Miller for guidance and creating a movie that was not only badass but was true to the original spirit of the source material. This means he'd probably have no qualms about ringing up Corey Barlog and David Jaffe during the making of the movie to get their input, which would only help the final product. Granted, Rodriguez might not have the background or experience working with fantasy motifs like Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro but he'd be an interesting dark horse candidate to take on the reins of God of War.

Robert Rodriguez, and Del Toro are great choices. Especially Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth is amazing and so well made, looks beautiful.
It is a good list though, in general.

Del Toro was a great choice, in fact i would like to see him as number 2. i think M. Night Shyamalan could put one hell of a good twist as well as story on this. i mean God of War. we saw him do Signs, the Sixth Sense, the Village. those movies were pretty damn good if u ask me.

I too am dissapointed in the choice of Brett Ratner... but I personally wouldn't like any of these men. I say, let's give it to P.T. Anderson. I think he would tear this film up. I remember when the rumor hit that he was going to direct MGS, I was ecstatic.

This list shows how much other talent there could have been working on what could be a great movie. Hell, it would be sick to see Peter Jackson and Zack Snyder to team up. Dissappointing... at least the games will always be good.
