Digital Camo Skins
MSRP: price varies
Website: www.digitalcamoskins.com
A lot of money goes into designing a game console and it shows: the curvy shape of the Xbox 360, the towering monolithic design PS3 and the cute as a button vibe of the Wii were no accidents--they were the result of a lot of research and calculated design choices. The only bad thing is that everyone else has the same console. Your neighbors, your friends, your parents and complete strangers: everyone's consoles look exactly alike.
Sure you can invest in a custom paint job but those can get pricey. So what's the solution? The folks at Digital Camo Skins have one option: graphic decals that you can slap onto your console. They have some awesome designs and will probably add more as they go along; we're also crossing our fingers that they offer an option for you to add customized graphics sometime soon.
Regardless, if you want to dress up your console a little bit and you don't want to shell out the cash for a custom paint job, then Digital Camo Skins is one alternative worth considering.
Yamaha YDD-60 Electronic Drum Kit
MSRP: $169.99
Website: www.yamaha.com
From The Who's Keith Moon to the Muppet Animal, drummers are the epitome of rock and roll cool but there are two factors that have kept us from picking up the instrument: the sheer size of the drum set and the money that you have to invest. Oh, and the fact that our neighbors would probably call the cops on us for playing drums all day long. Thank the rock gods for electronic drum kits like the Yamaha YDD-60: the unit is pretty beefy but it doesn't require as much space as a full kit. And yet, it still provides everything you need to lay down some awesome drum tracks. It's fully featured and doesn't cost an arm and a leg; best of all, you can plug in headphones and wail away without disturbing anyone else.
Vudu Streaming Movie Service
MSRP: $399 (Vudu unit); price of movies vary
Website: www.vudu.com
It seems like everyone has a Netflix account these days and why not? It's convenient and fast. But sometimes, you get stuck with a bunch of movies that don't fit your mood and the only recourse you had was to go out to the video store and pick something up. But wasn't the whole point of getting a Netflix account to avoid having to do that?
That's where the Vudu comes in handy: it's a slick little device that allows you to stream movies over your Internet connection. The catalogue won't rival that of Netflix or your local Blockbuster but there are a ton of awesome movies and more are being added at a constant rate. Movies play right away so there's no need to wait around for things to download and the picture quality is awesome, especially if you have an HDTV.
The only stumbling block is the price--you have to pay almost four hundred dollars for the set-top box and a flat fee for each movie you stream--but if you watch a ton of movies and hate waiting for the mailman, the Vudu is an interesting choice.
