Your guide to the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta

Want in on the action? Here's everything you need to know (why and how) to get into the Call of Duty 4 beta.

It seems like everyone is drooling all over the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta (including us), so if you haven't been keeping up, here's the deal. Beta codes opened up to the public yesterday (Aug. 27), but those codes are since gone. Now, you can head back over to the official website and submit your name to enter into a random lottery to receive a code.

The multiplayer beta itself has three levels and, for now, seems to cap at experience level 11, but the team at Infinity Ward has mentioned that in the final game it could go higher than 60. If you're still unsure about getting into the game, here's everything you should know.

1. It is not Call of Duty.

Forget what you know about the Call of Duty series. Think of the first three Call of Duty games as a trilogy, because Modern Warfare is a new beginning for the franchise, and after your first game in the multiplayer beta, you'll understand why. Everything about the game's multiplayer component is done better than before. The graphics are stunning, the levels and gametypes are well thought out and the upgrade and "perks" system is incredibly fun and addictive.

2. It's all about upgrades.

In the beta, we get a peek at how the upgrade system works in the online multiplayer mode. It's all very RPG-ish, so the more you play, the faster you upgrade. Like Halo, you get a character ranking that matches you up with players of similar skill level via a new matchmaking system. But unlike Halo, your character will upgrade in real time during the game, and you'll get an on-screen message when you rank up. Also, you get a nice breakdown of how many experience points you need to reach the next class ranking. Instant rewards--that's a great way of keeping players coming back for more.

But there are weapon upgrades, too, and you'll unlock items gun add-ons like scopes, silencers and grenade launcher attachments to your base weapons. And these upgrades can provide huge advantages to your shooting skills. For example earning your first scope will offer a whole new level of accuracy. The more you use each weapon, the faster it will upgrade, and new attachments will become available.

Weapon add-ons like this scope will open up the more you use each gun.
