"Dear Call of Duty 4, Please come out soon so I can play you. Sincerely, Ahoy_and_Avast"
Name: Tae K. Kim (Ahoy_and_Avast)
Number of previous E3's you've attended: 0
Year your first E3 took place: 2007 (I am teh E3 n00b)
What was your overall impression of this year's E3?
It was a solid year but I didn't think there was anything earth shattering that came out of this year's E3. There weren't any big surprises: I kept waiting for someone to announce something that would make me go, "Holy crap," but no one did. Still, I think it was a great year. The quality of games coming out for all three major systems looks awesome and I can't wait for the upcoming holiday season.
How did it compare to E3's of past years? Was it better, worse or just as good?
I've never been to any other E3's but from the stories that I've heard, this one sounded like it was a lot more subdued. I know some people were sick of the circus atmosphere but I really wanted to witness the grand spectacle at least once.
What was the most memorable moment of this year's E3?
The Microsoft E3 Press Briefing. They put on a great show. The amphitheatre that they rented out was awesome and I got a taste of the showmanship that the big companies put into their presentations. Also, Microsoft provided us with butt cushions, which was a classy move. Oh, and the fact that all but one of the games they showed off is going to be playable this year is awesome.
Call of Duty 4 impressed Ahoy_and_Avast like no other game at E3
Who had the best E3: Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony?
I'm leaning towards Sony because they announced some great stuff but in the end, I think Microsoft had the best E3. They announced a solid lineup for the upcoming holiday months. Sony and Nintendo showed off a lot of interesting stuff but Microsoft's presentation focused almost entirely on titles that were coming out this year, and they had some impressive stuff. Also, I took in a lot of demos of multi-platform games and every single one was done on Xbox 360 hardware, which was interesting.
Which game left the biggest impression on you?
Call of Duty 4. No doubt about it. That game looks like it's going to be 31 flavors of amazing. The Ghillie suit demo from the Microsoft press briefing was fantastic. If they let us choose one game to take home with us at the end of the conference, this would have been it, with Rock Band a close second. Starcraft II would be third.
Which game was the most disappointing?
The Assassin's Creed demo that they did for the MS press briefing left me wondering if the game would live up to expectations. I have faith that it will but the demo seemed so rough. I'm also disappointed that I didn't get to see Fallout 3 but I'm pretty sure that game is going to be awesome anyway.
Did you see any games with the potential to be a sleeper hit? Why did it catch your eye?
Looney Tunes Acme Arsenal looked really promising. It definitely captured the humor and spirit of the old Looney Tunes cartoons, of which I am a huge fan. It also seemed like it had the same sort of fun that you find in the Lego Star Wars games. I'm definitely going to keep it on my radar. Oh, and LittleBigPlanet? Freaking awesome.
