Female gamers? FPS popularity? The top 20 games of last year? Check out statistics about you, the gamer!

When I registered for E3 today and took my smiley badge photo, I was also presented with a nifty little pamphlet. It listed about 10 pages of statistics put together by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) about gamers and the games we play.

The stats range from gamer ages and gender breakdown to genre specifics and top selling games. It's rare to see all these stats in one place, and it's a pretty interested read, so here it is for ya'll to check out.

67% of American heads of households play computer or video games.


The average game player age is: 33

28.2% under 18 years

47.6% 18-49 years

24.2% 50+ years


In 2007, 24% of gamers were over the age of 50.

38% female

62% male

Women age 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (31%) than boys age 17 or younger (20%).

How long have gamers been playing?

13 is the average number of years the adult gamers have been playing computer or video gamers.

Among most frequent gamers, adult males average 14 years for game playing, females for 11 years.
