The Best (and Worst) Video Game Commercials (page 2 of 3)

6. The Banned Xbox Commercial

Wow! Talk about audacious. No wonder this thing never aired. If I may paraphrase the curious Florian Eckhardt when describing the above, "it's like a spasming orifice propelling a naked, flesh-toned cannonball to a far-off emerald isle." Yeah. What he said.

5. Game Boy Micro

Given Nintendo's conservative slant in advertising, I don't think the left hand knew what the right has was doing in this case (left hand being Nintendo proper, the right hand being its Canadian branch). The result? A lab rat forfeiting cheese in favor of a Micro leg hump. Is it wrong I find this funny?

4. Wii Would Like To Play

Nintendo comes from a long line of bad advertising. Fortunately for them, they seem to be bucking the trend, at least with new Wii ads. The premise: a pair of likable Japanese men in suits drive a Smart Car to deliver motion-controlled games to unsuspecting Americans. As a bonus, the ads sport the most contagious music in a commercial to date courtesy of the Yoshida Brothers. Very nice form.

3. Gears of War, Mad World

Not only did Gears of War receive high marks on its game merits, its TV spot was widely popular too, and for good reason. It's the most sophisticated game commercial we've ever seen combining soft music with aggressive visuals. The commercial was so successful, in fact, that it spawned numerous remixes and even propelled Gary Jules' five-year-old Mad World track to the number one spot on iTunes. Most awesome.

2. Any Sega Genesis Ad

Let's get one thing straight; despite Sega's hardware mishaps, the company had some of the smartest, most skilled, and most ballsy advertisers on its payroll in the 90s. Whether it's the My Name is Earl co-star whacking his head with a stiff squirrel or an Aladdin gamer rubbing his "Welcome To The Next Level" genie lamp to betwixt unbelieving friends, the Sega scream never looses its appeal. I could listen to it all day. No joke.

1. PSP, Hells Yeah

We'll admit it. Other commercials could have easily been number one on our best video game commercials of all-time list, but here's why this classic ad wins: it's funny, it shows a bunch of games, it's bursting with style, and it's original without being forced. Roll that up, and you get one of the most memorable and popular game commercials ever, enough to top our list even. Hells yeah.

Very terrible list. I doubt the authors have ever even seen a half-decent game commercial.

Plus for a list that talks about "video game commercials" it has very few commercials actually about the games themselves.
