GamePro: First off, let's talk about your your involvement with NHL 2K7 as their cover athlete. How did that come about?

Joe Thornton: It was right around when the [NHL] awards banquet was going on. They asked me if I wanted to be on the cover and I said, 'For sure.' Obviously, being a gamer from way back and seeing different athletes on the cover of games made me think it was a no-brainer. And 2K always seems to have the best sports games, especially their hockey titles, so it was a perfect fit.

GP: Did you do anything besides just lending your image for the box?

JT: Yeah, they came up for practice to watch. They put a mic on me to hear what the guys say on the ice and I put in a little bit of input here and there just to make the game feel better. They showed me the PlayStation 3 version and how the tilt-controls worked and I thought it was a great idea. I think that every year whoever is going to be the cover athlete will have to put their two cents in to make the game feel more realistic.

GP: There are a lot of athletes that play games and they always complain that their digital representations aren't as good as the real deal.

JT: [Laughs] Not in my case. I told them if I'm going to be on the cover you guys have got to make me look good.

GP: So what video games do you play for fun?

JT: I play NHL 2K7, obviously. MLB 2K7, and Gears of War - that's a good one. That's pretty much it, a little bit of Madden here and there. I prefer the sports games, but I like to squeeze in a little bit of Gears of War.

Is there anyone on the planet who doesn't like Gears of War?
