PS3 Comeback? Sony unveils three new titles. Little Big Planet and new online socializer Home elicit oohs and aahs. Updates, screenshots, and video right here!
GamePro got a sneak peek at Sony's GDC 2007 presentation.
The highlights for the keynote are as follows:
Killzone
Sony showed a brief video of in-game footage from the new PS3 Killzone title. The game appears to be set on a far larger scale than the PS2 original, and featured driveable tanks. The physics and particle system looked highly impressive.
Sony promised more Killzone details at E3 this year, set in July.
Home
Phil Harrison announced a new feature for the PlayStation 3 that ties together community and Xbox 360-style achievements into an MMO-like interface. Called simply Home, the free downloadable application (hitting wide-scale beta in April and full-scale release in the fall) allows players to deck out a virtual apartment (multiple styles available) with furniture, music players, TVs, and other decorations. Players will be able to gather their friends into their virtual room and play pool, watch movies or listen to music (streamed off the PS3 hard disc), or launch straight into other games. The interface looked clean and simple, and the graphics were highly detailed. Watch the video here.
Little Big Planet
The star of the presentation was this quirky combination of side-scrolling puzzle-solving and create-your-own-game sandbox play. Players can quickly and easily create levels using the game's powerful internal physics engine. After building a level, you will be able to upload your project online so that others can try out your creation. In gameplay, the Sixaxis plays an important role, too, controlling many of your character's movements.
Little Big Planet was the highlight of the keynote, wowing audiences with its high-end graphics, realistic physics, and simple gameplay. The game will be available on Blu-ray disc, and will serve as the key example of Sony's neew "Game 3.0" initiative. Watch the video here.
Warhawk
Finally the secret is out: Warhawk will be a download-only game. We had a brief opportunity to play the game, and were left underwhelmed. The focus seems to be shifting more and more to on-foot action; during our half-hour play session, we were only able to pilot on of the aircraft once.
The graphics appeared to be so-so compared to other PS3 titles, and the firepower seemed anticlimactic. There's still time for Sony to polish out the kinks, though, so this is purely an early impression. Watch the video here.
