Half-Life

Here's a recast version of our Half-Life cheat that lays out in greater detail how to twist this pre-eminent first-person shooter to your will.

1) First off, you'll need to enable the console interface within the single-player game. To do this, you'll first need to find the HL.exe file. It's in the C:\Sierra\Half-Life directory, and it looks like a little red Half-Life symbol with the filename "hl."

2) Highlight the file and right-click on it with the mouse to summon the command menu.

3) In that menu, left-click on "Create shortcut." This will create a small file in the Half-Life directory called "Shortcut to hl".

4) Drag this file out of the Half-Life directory and onto your desktop and drop it there. The shortcut should now appear on your Windows 9x desktop.

5) Now, right-click on the shortcut itself to summon the command menu and, this time, left-click on the "Properties" command.

6) This will call up a window labeled "Shortcut to hl Properties." Left-click on the "Shortcut" tab at the top of the screen. (You shouldn't need to, but do it anyway just to make sure it's active.) In this new window, you'll see four command lines labeled Target, Start in, Shortcut key, and Run.

7) The top one, Target, is the one we want. It should currently read: C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe. The text in the white area to the right of "Target:" is highlighted in blue. Left-click in the blank area to the right of the text to de-highlight it.

8) Now here comes the delicate part. We're going to alter the command that appears in the Target line. After the "hl.exe," add the following parameters: "-dev -toconsole".

9) Be sure to type that exactly as it appears here. Don't use the quotes. Be certain to use hyphens instead of dashes. And insert a space between hl.exe and -dev, and another between -dev and -toconsole.

10) Your Target line should now read: C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -dev -toconsole

11) All set? Then left-click on "OK" to save your work.

12) Double-left-click on the shortcut to start Half-Life.

13) Half-Life should bypass the opening screens and load directly to the console interface. If you already have a quick-save game, hit the F7 key to load it now. If you are starting a new game, type "map c0a0" (again, with no quotes) into the console to start with the train ride introduction, or "map c1a0" (still no quotes) to start after the introduction.

14) If you did everything right, the console is now enabled. You just need to hit the "tilde" key--the one with the squiggly little symbol (~) to the left of the "1" key--to call up the console.

15) Once the console is on screen, type in "/give" (no quotes), then a space and then the cheat you want to invoke from the list below. Press "Enter."

16) Example: /give weapon_shotgun. (Note that standard Quake cheats such as "god" "fly" "noclip" and "notarget" will work as well.)

17) And away we go:

You want more? We got more. We've just received from one Jesse McMillen a way to add monsters to the single-player game. (Personally, we think Half-Life has enough monsters already, but to each his own.)

1) Travel to the room where you want to insert the monster, hit the "~" key to call up the console, type in "noclip" (sans quotes) and hit "Enter." This will allow you to float through walls and ceilings.

2) Here's the tricky part: You'll want to position yourself so you're hovering above the room's ceiling without being in it.

3) Once in position, bring down the console again and type "/give monster_xxxxxx" (minus the quotes, and with the Xs representing the name of the monster from the list below) and hit "Enter."

4) Note that the monster you add must be in that particular level of the game, or Half-Life will shut down.

5) Should the game appear to freeze, hit "Enter" again. The monster you added may be too far above the ground or stuck in a wall.

6) Finally, note that you can only add one monster to a given area. Attempts to add additional monsters will result in error messages.

Here's the list of monster names. Bon app?tit. Me, I'm getting the hell out of Dodge.
